According to the latest research released by the International Data Corporation (IDC), Nokia Window's Phones have risen in sales to 11.8% from 9.7% beating the iOS sales that went down to 11.4%. With 2 in 5 phones in the Middle East now smartphones and sales on the rise, it will be interesting to watch the fight for the position of market leader.
People are becoming more and more curious about which smart phone is the best based on their specifications and not a clever brand positioning. The Middle East is an especially interesting target market for smart phone developers because it is a country where people have a high disposable income and a desire for the latest and greatest in technology. With these facts in mind, there is an expectation that smartphones companies will become more and more prevalent in the region with much larger distribution.
The spike in Nokia Windows sales is supposedly due to the features of the Lumia devices. It is actually the entry-level Lumia 925 smartphones that are the most popular, which isn't great for the
average selling price of Nokia's phones. However the Lumia 925 arguably offers the ultimate multimedia package in one smartphone device. It is well designed, has a much better camera that its predecessor the 920, offers unlimited downloads from one of the biggest music catalogues (Nokia Music Store) as well as offline navigation. It is certainly a device to compete with.
Nokia is the brand leader in the Middle East with 45.2% market share with Samsung far behind in second place at 18.3%. Samsung, however, has outsold Nokia by 5-to-1 when it comes to smartphones. Android dominates the smartphone market in the Middle East at the moment but this was stalled by the sales of Nokia Windows Phones and the iPhones. Blackberry phones are still holding on to second place in the market share of smartphones but this is because of their older model the BB7 devices.
It is going to be interesting to watch how the market develops over the next few years as sales in the Middle East increase. Who do you think will come out on top? Comment below!
